This week, I deviated a bit from my theme of finding your reader and message to talk about a topic that affects us as writers in a broad way—the use of AI in our writing.
Thanks, Amy, for speaking to this issue and sharing your thinking on it. It’s a subject we all need to grapple with. I appreciated you sharing those 3 questions that help you think about it.
I really appreciated what you shared in this episode. I thought I'd reciprocate and let you know how I use it. (A lot of it is similar to you.)
Like most, I have struggled with how to best use AI. Just to share some of the ways I've found it most helpful for myself...I've decided if there's something I would pay someone else to do (like editing), I am okay with allowing AI to assist with that.
I LOVE using it for brainstorming! I equate it to when in my younger years, I would pour over the Mailbox magazines that would be in the teacher's lounge. (Former teacher here.) I would often use the ideas I found in the magazine as a springboard for generating other ideas. I am using ChatGPT in the same way.
It's great at providing a marketing plan or layout.
And, sometimes when I'm just lost for a word (i.e. I'm wanting to use alliteration and want three words that begin with P, but after word 2, my mind goes blank), I ask ChatGPT for 7 choices for a word that would complete my thought.

That makes a lot of sense! Thanks for sharing!
